The San Francisco bay has been used for salt mining since the mid-1800s. Salt evaporation ponds ring the southern end of the bay, and are well known to commuters who travel over the Dumbarton bridge. Most of these evaporation ponds have been purchased by the state of California, and are being slowly restored to salt marshlands.
A co-worker mentioned to me that he thought the salt ponds were fascinating to look at and would make great photos. I agreed with him, so one day I took a stroll around the edges of the evaporation ponds at the western end of the Dumbarton bridge, resulting in these photos.
These are also the last photos I took with my FujiFilm FinePix S3000 camera. After I return from a week-long vacation, I'll begin submitting the photos from my new Nikon D60
